FAQs
What is the ADF JOA test?
1
The JOA (Job Opportunities Assessment) is the ADF's aptitude test completed as part of the recruitment process. It tests verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, and abstract reasoning — 51 questions in just 20 minutes. It is very rare for candidates to finish all 51 questions in time, so speed and accuracy under pressure are everything.
Your score determines which ADF roles you are eligible for, essentially unlocking or locking out entire career pathways. You get a maximum of 3 attempts, with a 6-month waiting period between each one — so going in underprepared can cost you months and your place in the recruitment queue.
Can you prepare for the ADF aptitude test?
2
Yes. While the JOA assesses reasoning ability, practising under timed conditions improves your speed, accuracy, and confidence. Familiarising yourself with the question formats means you won't waste time figuring out instructions on test day.
How many times can you sit the ADF aptitude test?
3
You can attempt the ADF aptitude test a maximum of three times in your lifetime, with a minimum 12-month wait between each attempt. This makes thorough preparation before your first attempt essential.
What happens if you fail the ADF JOA?
4
If your score is too low for your preferred role, you may still be eligible for other ADF roles. However, if you want to re-sit, you must wait at least 12 months. Preparing well the first time gives you the best chance of qualifying for the role you want.
