Abstract reasoning comprises 17 of the 51 questions in the JOA. It is designed to test your reading comprehension and vocabulary. There are 3 types of question you will encounter during the verbal reasoning section:
Synonyms
These questions require you to determine which two words are not synonyms with a group of 6. The easiest way to answer this question is to find 3 defining words, which will give you the “theme” of the question. Then you can determine which two do not relate to the theme in the group.
Confirmation statements
These questions require you to find two statements that work together to prove a statement. It is important to note that one singular statement in the options of the question would prove the argument. However this would not be the answer, the statements have to work together in order to be the correct answer.
Word analogies
In these questions, you must determine the relationship of the first two words. So if A is to B, C is to X, under the same relationship.
Word Definitions
These questions require you to determine if words have similar, negligible, or opposite meanings. If you are able to define each word from your own vocabulary. You are able to determine if they are similar or not.
