What Is the ADF YOU Session?

If you are partway through the ADF recruitment process, you will have been told that a YOU Session is one of the next steps. Most candidates have no idea what it actually is — and the information online is limited. This post explains exactly what the YOU Session is, why it exists, and what you need to know before yours.

‍ ‍

The Short Answer

‍ ‍

The YOU Session — short for Your Opportunities and Understanding Session — is a structured phone interview with a Defence Force Recruiting Careers Coach. It is one of the key assessment points in the ADF recruitment pipeline, and it determines whether you progress to the next stage of your application.

‍ ‍

It typically runs between 30 and 60 minutes. It is conducted over the phone. And it is more formal than most candidates expect.

‍ ‍

Why Does the YOU Session Exist?

‍ ‍

The ADF receives a large number of applications. Not all of those applicants are ready. The YOU Session exists to filter out candidates who have not done the work — who don't understand their chosen role, don't know what they're signing up for, or can't articulate a genuine reason for wanting to serve.

‍ ‍

It is also an opportunity for your Careers Coach to get a clear picture of who you are. Are you self-aware? Do you take direction well? Are you genuinely committed, or is this something you're trying because nothing else has worked out?

‍ ‍

The YOU Session is not designed to trick you. It is designed to find out whether you are ready.

‍ ‍

What Gets Covered?

Your Careers Coach will work through several areas during the call. These include:

‍ ‍

Your motivation to serve. Why do you want to join the ADF? Why your chosen role? Why now? Your answer needs to be genuine and specific. Vague answers get probed until you give something real — or until the Careers Coach moves on with a negative impression.

‍ ‍

Your understanding of your role and training. Do you know your Initial Military Training location and how long it runs? Do you know where your trade training takes place and what it involves? Do you know what your day-to-day role actually looks like? Most candidates know the job title. Far fewer have looked into the training pipeline.

‍ ‍

Your fitness. You will be asked about your fitness level, your training routine, and whether you can pass the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) for your role. You need to know the exact standard for your Service and role — and you need to be meeting it before your call.

‍ ‍

ADF policies. This covers the ADF's position on drugs and alcohol, the Defence Force Discipline Act, unrestricted service (meaning you can be posted anywhere, at any time), and your willingness to serve in a combat capacity if required by your role.

‍ ‍

Your awareness of what the ADF does. You will be expected to know about ADF operations — both overseas and domestic. You don't need to be an expert, but you do need to know more than nothing.

‍ ‍

There are also additional questions that can appear at any point in the call — where you want to be posted, whether you have the support of your family, whether you are ready to begin training immediately, and more.

‍ ‍

What Happens If You Don't Pass?

If your Careers Coach does not feel you are ready to progress, your application may be paused or you may be asked to reapply at a later date. Some candidates are given specific areas to work on and invited to reschedule. Others are not.

‍ ‍

The YOU Session is not the end of the recruitment process — but it is a genuine gate. Candidates who go in unprepared regularly do not pass.

‍ ‍

What Happens After the YOU Session?

If you progress past the YOU Session, the next stages typically include your medical assessment and your Physical Fitness Assessment. The exact sequence can vary depending on your Service and role, but the YOU Session must be cleared before you move forward.

‍ ‍

Is the YOU Session Hard?‍ ‍

It depends entirely on how prepared you are.

‍ ‍

For candidates who have researched their role thoroughly, know the ADF's values and policies, can speak confidently about their motivation, and have been training consistently — the YOU Session is straightforward.

‍ ‍

For candidates who have done none of that, it is very difficult to fake your way through. The questions are specific, and your Careers Coach has heard every vague answer before.

‍ ‍

The YOU Session rewards preparation. That is the simplest way to put it.
