Top 10 Highest Paying ADF Careers in 2026
Thinking about joining the Australian Defence Force? One of the most common questions we get is how much the ADF actually pays. The answer might surprise you. Some ADF careers start at over $140,000 per year — and that's before you factor in the benefits package that comes with every single role.
In this post we break down the top 10 highest paying careers in the Australian Defence Force for 2026, including what each role actually does and what you'll earn from day one.
What Every ADF Career Includes
Before getting into the list, it's worth understanding what every ADF career comes with regardless of the role you choose. Every member receives 16.4% superannuation — 4.4% above the Australian standard — along with free medical and dental care, subsidised healthcare for their family, fully paid training and housing assistance. These benefits add significant value on top of your base salary and are something you simply won't find in most civilian roles.
A Note on Starting Salaries
The salaries listed below are minimum starting rates — what you earn after completing your Initial Military Training and Employment Training. As you gain experience and climb the ranks, your salary increases significantly. To put that in perspective, senior officers at the rank of Vice Admiral, Lieutenant General or Air Marshal can earn $290,000 to $390,000 or more per year. The Chief of Defence Force sits even higher than that. The figures below are just the beginning.
Number 10 — Aerospace Engineer Officer: $121,538 per year
The Aerospace Engineer Officer manages airworthiness and maintenance programs for Navy aviation assets. In this role you oversee engineering projects and keep Navy aircraft mission-ready at all times. This role also exists in the Army and Air Force.
Number 9 — Chaplain: $124,146 per year
ADF Chaplains provide spiritual support and pastoral care to ADF members and their families. They support personnel through the unique psychological and spiritual challenges of military life, deployments and combat. All major faiths are represented across the three services.
Number 8 — Mine Warfare and Clearance Diving Officer: $129,275 per year
This is one of the most physically demanding roles in the entire ADF. Mine Warfare and Clearance Diving Officers lead elite diving teams in the detection and disposal of underwater mines and improvised explosive devices. Candidates must pass one of Australia's most gruelling selection courses to qualify.
Number 7 — Dentist: $131,093 per year
ADF Dentists deliver dental care to personnel at bases, aboard ships and on operations. They serve across all three services — Navy, Army and Air Force — ensuring members maintain the readiness required for military service through good oral health.
Number 6 — Mechanical Engineer: $136,012 per year
The Mechanical Engineer oversees power, propulsion and mechanical systems across Navy surface vessels. You lead teams of Marine Technicians keeping ships mission-ready at sea and in port. This is a technically demanding leadership role at the heart of Navy operations.
Number 5 — Electronics Engineer: $136,012 per year
Electronics Engineers lead teams maintaining electronics, combat systems and sensors across the surface fleet. In shore-based positions they support fleet acquisition, system certification and the training of junior engineers. It is a role that combines deep technical expertise with team leadership.
Number 4 — Nuclear Submarine Officer: $138,356 per year
This is a brand-new and highly specialised role created for Australia's AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine program. Nuclear Submarine Officers operate and maintain nuclear-powered submarines — making it one of the most technically demanding and consequential positions in the entire ADF.
Number 3 — Doctor: $138,979 per year
ADF Doctors provide full medical care to personnel at bases, on ships and on deployment — from routine consultations through to emergency trauma care in operational environments. All three services recruit doctors across a range of specialties, and the role offers experiences simply not available in civilian medicine.
Number 2 — Mechanical Engineer Submariner: $142,778 per year
The Mechanical Engineer Submariner is the marine systems expert onboard a Navy submarine, leading a team responsible for the submarine's structure, engines, propulsion, air conditioning and electrical distribution systems. You ensure the entire mechanical engineering plant runs reliably across every phase of the mission.
Number 1 — Electronics Engineer Submariner: $142,778 per year
The highest paying career in the ADF. As an Electronics Engineer Submariner you maintain and repair combat, sonar, navigation and weapons systems onboard a Navy submarine. At sea you are the engineering authority, providing critical advice to the Commanding Officer. Ashore you support fleet acquisition and system certification programs.
