ADF JOA Tips: How to Perform Your Best on the Job Opportunities Assessment

You've done the preparation — now it's time to make sure you walk into the ADF Job Opportunities Assessment ready to perform. Knowing the content is only part of the equation. How you approach the test on the day makes a significant difference to your final score. Watch the video below for a quick rundown, then read the full breakdown of each tip.

Tip 1: Read Every Question Carefully

This sounds obvious, but it's the tip most candidates ignore under pressure. The JOA is fast — 51 questions in 20 minutes — and the temptation to skim questions and jump to the answers is real. Don't. Every word in a question matters. A single word like "not," "always," or "only" can completely change what the correct answer is. Misreading a question and answering confidently from the wrong premise is one of the most common and avoidable ways candidates lose marks on the ADF aptitude test.

Tip 2: Use Process of Elimination

Process of elimination is the fastest way to work through a difficult question on the JOA. Rather than searching for the correct answer from scratch, start by identifying the options that clearly don't work and rule them out. Even eliminating one or two wrong answers significantly improves your odds and speeds up your decision. On abstract reasoning questions in particular, eliminating options that obviously violate the pattern is nearly always faster than identifying the rule first and then finding the answer that matches it.

Tip 3: Manage Your Time — Aim for 10 to 15 Seconds Per Question

The JOA is a rapid-fire test. With 51 questions and 20 minutes on the clock, you have an average of under 24 seconds per question across the whole assessment. Aiming to answer each question in 10 to 15 seconds where possible gives you a buffer of time to spend on the questions that genuinely need more thought. Candidates who spend 60 seconds on a single difficult question without realising it are sacrificing four or five other questions they likely would have answered correctly.

Tip 4: Don't Underestimate the JOA

The Job Opportunities Assessment is not a formality. ADF positions are competitive, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for candidates to secure their preferred careers. Your JOA score directly determines which roles you're eligible for — the higher you score, the more options become available to you. Treating the JOA as something you can wing on the day is one of the most common mistakes applicants make. Prepare for it with the same seriousness you'd bring to any important exam.

Tip 5: Answer Every Single Question

There is no penalty for a wrong answer on the JOA. Every question is multiple choice, which means even a blind guess gives you a one in four chance of being correct. Leaving a question blank guarantees zero. If you have absolutely no idea on a question, select your best guess and move on — never leave a question unanswered. This applies especially to questions you've skipped due to time pressure. If you have any seconds remaining at the end, go back and fill in anything left blank.

Tip 6: Balance Speed and Accuracy — Know When to Move On

Speed and accuracy are both important on the JOA, but they need to be balanced. If you don't know the answer to a question after a genuine attempt, move on immediately. Stalling on one question doesn't just cost you that question — it costs you time on every question that follows. Mark your best guess, move forward, and maintain your momentum through the rest of the assessment. Your overall score across all 51 questions matters more than getting any single question right.

Tip 7: Practise More Than Once — and Review Your Results

The single most effective way to reduce exam anxiety and build genuine confidence going into the JOA is repeated, deliberate practice. Not just sitting one practice test and moving on — practising more than once, reviewing your results after each attempt, identifying which question types cost you the most time or the most errors, and targeting those specifically before the next session.

Practice also builds something that matters beyond the test itself: discipline. The habit of sitting down, working under time pressure, and reviewing your performance honestly is the same discipline the ADF is looking for in the people it recruits.

Use your practice test results as a diagnostic. If verbal reasoning questions are taking too long, focus your next session there. If abstract reasoning errors are consistent, go back to the pattern checklist. Structured, reviewed practice is what separates candidates who improve from candidates who just repeat the same mistakes at speed.
