How Many Questions Are in the ADF JOA?

The ADF Job Opportunities Assessment (JOA) is one of the most important steps in your ADF application. Before you sit it, you need to know exactly what you're walking into — including how many questions there are, how they're structured, and how much time you have.

The JOA Has 51 Questions in 20 Minutes

The Job Opportunities Assessment contains 51 multiple choice questions that must be completed in 20 minutes. That works out to an average of just under 24 seconds per question — which is why time management and preparation are so critical.

The test is divided into three sections:

Section 1: Numerical Reasoning — 17 Questions

Numerical reasoning questions test your ability to work with numbers, patterns, and matrices under time pressure. You'll be shown number sequences, grids, or matrix problems and asked to identify the missing value or next number in the pattern. These questions are fast to answer once you recognise the pattern type — which is why practising numerical reasoning specifically is the highest-leverage thing you can do before the JOA.

Section 2: Abstract Reasoning — 17 Questions

Abstract reasoning questions test your ability to identify patterns in shapes and figures. You'll be shown a series of images and asked which option continues the pattern or replaces the missing piece. These questions test your logical thinking rather than any specific knowledge — but like numerical reasoning, they respond very well to practice.

Section 3: Verbal Reasoning — 17 Questions

Verbal reasoning questions test your ability to draw logical conclusions from written information. You'll be presented with a short statement or scenario and asked which conclusion is definitely true, possibly true, or definitely false based only on the information given. Reading carefully and avoiding assumptions is essential in this section.

Why the Question Count Matters for Your Preparation

Knowing the structure of the JOA isn't just useful trivia — it directly shapes how you should prepare. Because each section has exactly 17 questions and you have 20 minutes total, you have roughly 6-7 minutes per section if you divide your time evenly. In practice, you won't — some questions will take 5 seconds, others will take closer to 30. The candidates who perform best are those who have practised enough to move quickly through familiar question types and save time for the harder ones.

What Happens If You Don't Finish?

There is no penalty for a wrong answer on the JOA, so never leave a question blank. If you run out of time on a section, make your best guess on any remaining questions. A guess gives you a one in four chance of being correct — a blank answer gives you zero.

Ready to Practise?

Now that you know exactly what the JOA looks like, the next step is sitting timed practice under real conditions.
